New Health and Education Laws
Gov. Ron DeSantis signed eight health and education-related bills into law on Tuesday, including a measure to make it more affordable for state employees to get follow-up breast cancer exams.
The new law, which goes into effect Jan. 1, 2026, waives additional copays, deductibles, and other cost-sharing requirements for state employees’ diagnostic and supplemental breast examinations.
The bill cleared both chambers without a single vote against it.
Another bill signed into law, the Evin B. Hartsell Act, requires public schools to teach Disability History and Awareness in grades K–12 during the first two weeks of October.
Cucumbers Recalled for Salmonella
Cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers in Boynton Beach and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales in Delray have been linked to illnesses caused by salmonella in at least 26 people across 15 states. Nine people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported.
The newest batch of cucumbers affected were sold to restaurants, stores, and food service distributors between April 29 and May 19 and may still be within their labeled shelf life this week.
The outbreak was detected during a follow-up inspection at Bedner Growers, which was tied to a 2024 outbreak that sickened 551 people and led to 155 hospitalizations in 34 states and Washington, D.C.
New Florida Tourism Record
Florida set an all-time annual record in 2024 with 143 million visitors, an increase of 1.7% over the previous record set in 2023. The historic growth includes 130.7 million domestic travelers, 8.9 million overseas visitors, and 3.4 million Canadian tourists.
During the first quarter of 2025, Florida welcomed 41.2 million guests, 91.9% of whom were domestic visitors. The majority of international travelers—64.2%—arrived by non-air travel.
Gov. Ron DeSantis said that Florida’s tourism industry leads the nation, and the results offer “proof that our freedom-first policies work, and that Florida remains the best place to visit, work, and raise a family.”
