Article Icon 1Judge Blocks Florida Social Media Law

A federal judge blocked a 2024 Florida law banning minors from social media platforms, saying it likely violates First Amendment rights and that parents have a role in policing social media use.

A group representing companies including Google, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube filed the suit in October, and former Attorney General Ashley Moody had agreed not to enforce the law while the parties wait for a decision.

U.S. District Judge Mark Walker had dismissed the suit in March because the companies had not proven they would be affected. On Tuesday, however, Walker barred the state from enforcing the law.

The measure was designed to prevent harm to youth, specifically targeting platforms that use strategies to build addiction. The judge found the law applies too broadly.

Article Icon 1Mayors Bet on Stanley Cup

With the Florida Panthers battling the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL Stanley Cup Final for the second year in a row, the mayor of Sunrise, home of the Panthers, has made a friendly wager with the mayor of Edmonton.

Following Florida’s Game 7 win at home last year, the city of Sunrise sent Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi a signed Florida Panthers jersey, which he wore in a photo after last year’s bet.

This year, Sunrise Mayor Michael J. Ryan upped the ante by challenging Edmonton to declare an official day in honor of the winning team.

The Panthers defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs in the playoffs, then beat the Carolina Hurricanes to win a third straight Eastern Conference title.

Florida lost Game 1 of the series to Edmonton 4-3 in overtime last night. Amerant Bank Arena will host a watch party for Game 2 tomorrow night before the series returns home on Monday.

Remember when people said, “Nobody will rent their homes to strangers”? Early Airbnb investors who ignored the skeptics saw $1,000 grow to $5 million at the company’s IPO.

And with their Nasdaq ticker ($MODE) secured, you now have a limited time to invest at just $0.30/share
