$29.5M for Biscayne Bay and Coral Reef Restoration
Speaking at the FIU Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, the governor announced that the state’s ambitious efforts to restore the Everglades, Indian River Lagoon, and Biscayne Bay have reached $100 million in funding.
DeSantis announced $20 million in state grants to help clean Biscayne Bay and another $9.5 million to protect the state’s coral reefs.
“These projects include septic to sewer conversion, wastewater storage projects that will lead to improved water quality of Biscayne Bay. What we’ve already done has made a difference,” DeSantis said.
Gubernatorial Candidate Calls for Special Session
Former House Speaker Paul Renner wants Florida lawmakers to immediately convene a Special Session to roll back property taxes to 2024 levels, arguing Floridians need relief now before taxes go up again in 2026.
Renner, who is running for Governor, has been among GOP leaders advocating for property tax cuts or elimination. Republicans have been openly disagreeing on the best way to put an initiative on the ballot next year for voter approval.
Gov. Ron DeSantis has rejected seven House tax cut plans as insufficient, instead pushing for the complete elimination of homestead property taxes with state dollars backfilling local revenues.
Sixty-five percent of Florida voters want state lawmakers to slash or end property taxes, despite the potential impact on local services, according to a new poll by Tallahassee-based Sachs Media that surveyed 1,230 voters in November.
