Florida Lawmaker Facing Calls to Resign
Miami-Dade Republicans and others are calling for Palmetto Bay Councilman Steve Cody to resign after he made a social media post about Charlie Kirk’s assassination that officials called “a stain on our community.”
In a now-deleted Facebook post, Cody stated, “Charlie Kirk is a fitting sacrifice to our Lords: Smith & Wesson. Hallowed be their names.” He later said that he regretted the post but did not intend to resign.
State officials also criticized his comments, with Attorney General James Uthmeier saying, “If this Facebook post is legitimate, Steve Cody should resign from his position as a Palmetto Bay Council member immediately.”
Palmetto Bay Mayor Karyn Cunningham said the council will address the issue at its Sept. 17 meeting but stressed that the decision whether or not to step down rests solely with Cody.
Six Officers Fired over Handling of Homicide
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office has fired six deputies and disciplined 11 others over their handling of the case of Mary Gingles, who repeatedly told officers she feared her husband would kill her before she was murdered in a triple homicide.
“We had a chance to save that woman’s life, and we failed. Anyone with a badge and a gun who thinks that is acceptable can resign today,” Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony said.
Estranged husband Nathan Gingles had repeatedly violated restraining orders in the days leading up to Feb. 16, when he allegedly shot and killed his wife; her father, David Ponzer; and her neighbor Andrew Ferrin.
“We know that wind only accounts for less than 10% of fatalities in general, but yet our current category system is based on wind alone. Storm surge accounts for closer to 50% and rainfall accounts for closer to 30%,” said Jennifer Collins, a hurricane researcher at the University of South Florida.
The new scale is called the Tropical Cyclone Severity Scale and it provides a different category for each hazard such as wind, storm surge, and rainfall, along with a combined final category.
“Frequently, people use the storm’s category to decide whether to evacuate, that’s incredibly dangerous, because if they hear it’s only a tropical storm or Category 1, too often no alarm bells go off, and they see no cause for concern,” Collins said.

When our founder gave his dad, “Grandpa Jim,” a pair of Oricle hearing aids, nobody knew what to expect. For years, Jim had struggled to keep up with conversations—missing jokes, nodding along, and quietly withdrawing. But the moment he put them on, everything changed. Suddenly, voices were crisp, laughter rang out, and Jim was back in the middle of it all.
At one point, he even asked the family to “quiet down” because things were suddenly too clear. That moment stuck with us. For Jim, it wasn’t just about hearing better—it was about feeling present again. He loved them so much he immediately asked for an extra pair, just in case.

Our founder’s dad, “Grandpa Jim,” slipped on a pair of Oricle hearing aids—and the change was instant. For years he’d been on the sidelines of family conversations. But suddenly, he could hear everything so clearly he even asked everyone to quiet down. That’s how powerful the difference was.
The best part? He didn’t want to risk being without them again and immediately asked for backup pairs. It’s proof that better hearing is more than convenience—it’s connection. If you’ve been thinking about it, this is your sign to finally make the change. Discover Oricle today.
