Article Icon 1Medical Malpractice Bill Returns

A Florida House committee is scheduled to take up a medical malpractice bill filed by Rep. Dana Trabulsy, R-Fort Pierce, next week.

Under current law, if a doctor or hospital commits a fatal error, parents cannot sue for pain and suffering if their adult child was over 25. Likewise, adult children can’t sue if their parents die from medical malpractice.

A similar bill was vetoed by Gov. Ron DeSantis earlier this year, who explained that it did not include safeguards like caps on non-economic damages and attorney’s fees.

Article Icon 1First Arrests under ‘Halo Law’

Two women have been arrested after the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said they violated Florida’s new “Halo Law,” which establishes a 25-foot buffer zone where it is illegal to harass, threaten, or impede officers.

These were the first arrests in Jacksonville under the new law.

The incident started when a woman left her car running in an intersection, then tried to deny the car was hers and resisted arrest. The woman and the police officer were surrounded by bystanders during the ensuing scuffle, leading to two additional arrests.

When you see scuffles like that, you have to worry about protecting your firearm as a law enforcement officer,” Tom Hackney, News4JAX’s crime and safety analyst, explained.
