Florida state Sen. Jason Pizzo announced a run for governor Saturday. Pizzo recently quit the Democratic Party, changing his affiliation to independent.

“NPAs (no party affiliation voters) decide who win elections in this state, and there’s 3.7 million of them,Pizzo said.

U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Naples) is the only other candidate to announce a run for governor in the 2026 race.

Donalds was endorsed by President Trump and is currently polling 19 percentage points ahead of possible candidate Casey DeSantis, wife of Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is term-limited and unable to seek re-election.

It’s expected to be a record year for stinky seaweed as the first sargassum started washing up on Florida’s Space Coast near Cape Canaveral.

The University of South Florida is monitoring the largest sargassum bloom ever recorded—an estimated 31 million tons. When this seaweed washes ashore and begins to rot, it releases a foul odor that can make breathing difficult.

How much eventually washes up on shore will depend on winds and other factors.

“The majority of sargassum is really far away. There’s some moderate amount in the western Caribbean sea, but it will take a month or more for that sargassum to reach Florida,” said Dr. Chuanmin Hu, professor of Oceanography at USF’s College of Marine Science.

The St. Petersburg Coast Guard rescued a man whose boat capsized early Saturday morning near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

U.S. Coast Guard officials emphasized the importance of having a safety plan in place ahead of National Safe Boating Week, scheduled for May 17-23.

The fact that this mariner shared his float plan with his wife, coupled with the seamless coordination between our partner agencies, undoubtedly played a significant role in saving his life,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Joseph Catell of the St. Petersburg station.

The man was uninjured and is working with commercial salvage to retrieve his boat.
