ICE Considers Orlando Warehouse Facility
Immigration and Customs Enforcement representatives toured a warehouse in International Corporate Park in southeast Orange County on Friday as a potential site for a detention center.
The property is being marketed as a “state-of-the-art facility” with a prime location within minutes of Orlando’s major highways, right off of State Road 528, and within a 30-minute drive from Orlando International Airport.
“It’s a site that could fit that purpose, but we are at very early stages,” David Venturella, a senior ICE advisor said.
Currently, as part of Operation Tidal Wave, ICE agents appear to be operating in East Orlando, Winter Garden, Altamonte Springs, and Kissimmee.
This has led to a surge of jail bookings with immigration holds. On Friday morning, 377 inmates had been booked in the Orange County jail with immigration holds compared to 71 one week ago.
Bill Proposes AI Education in Schools
A bill sponsored by state Rep. Mike Giallombardo (R-Cape Coral) proposes mandatory AI education in Florida state schools starting as early as the fifth grade.
“We’re in a race to modernize the technology, against our adversaries,” Giallombardo said.
The bill also mandates offering high school electives in computer technology—including courses in artificial intelligence—so students can build practical skills and explore areas that match their interests.
Mega Cruise Ship Port Planned in Manatee County
Plans are in the works for a cruise ship port next to Rattlesnake Key in Manatee County to accommodate new, mega-sized cruise ships that can’t sail under Sunshine Skyway Bridge.
“A project of this magnitude will have many layers of review and due diligence. It does not surprise me that, once again, our region is a sought-after location for businesses to thrive and tourism to grow,” said Jacki Dezelski, president and CEO of the Manatee Chamber of Commerce.
Construction of the project would potentially generate more than 31,000 jobs and increase labor earnings by an estimated $1.6 billion across the state and regional economy, according to the developer.
Seattle-based SSA Marine posted the plan on their website earlier this week, outlining a partnership with Tampa-based Slip Knott LLC.
