Article Icon 1 Florida AG Suggests ‘Alligator Alcatraz’

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier proposed Thursday that the state turn an abandoned airport in the Everglades into a detention center for illegal immigrants, calling it “Alligator Alcatraz.”

You don’t need to invest that much in the perimeter. If people get out, there’s not much waiting for them other than alligators and pythons,” Uthmeier said.

The Dade-Collier Training Airport has 39 square miles of land and could potentially house 1,000 people, Uthmeier said.

Leah Lendel, the 9-year-old girl bitten by a shark at Boca Grande on June 11, has told the story of how she nearly lost her hand.

“I didn’t see anything, I was just snorkeling and went up to breathe, and then something hard bit me, and then it tried to take me away,” Lendel said on Thursday. “I pick up my hand and it’s all (covered in) blood, and then I started screaming.”

After a six-hour surgery to reattach her hand, Leah’s parents report that she is able to use all of her fingers. She’s still facing a long recovery.
