Bill to Ban Drivers from Holding Phones

A new bill filed this week in the Florida legislature would make it illegal for drivers to operate a vehicle while holding their phone in a “handheld manner.”

“‘Handheld manner’ means holding a wireless communications device in one or both hands or physically supporting the device with any other part of the body,” Senate Bill 1152 reads.

The bill, filed by state Sen. Erin Grall, R-Vero Beach, was revived from last session, when it passed the House but was never scheduled in the Senate.

DeSantis Condemns Toxic Baby Formula

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday condemned toxic baby formula during a joint press conference with First Lady Casey DeSantis, citing the presence of harmful substances in brands tested by the Florida Department of Health.

“Mercury was the most common (heavy metal) detected above federal benchmarks in 16 formulas. Arsenic exceeded benchmarks in five formulas; cadmium, three; and lead, two,” Casey DeSantis said.

Officials released the full list of 24 formulas tested with the results.

Cold Front Heading to Central Florida

A cold front will sweep through Central Florida on Sunday, bringing a few scattered showers to the region. Highs for Sunday will be in the upper 70s.

By early Monday, lows will fall into the mid- to upper 40s near and northwest of I-4, with 50s elsewhere.

While the chilly start to the week will be noticeable, it won’t come close to Florida’s coldest Januarys.

The coolest January on record in Florida was in 1940, according to a list compiled by Stacker. The average temperature was 48.2 degrees Fahrenheit, while the monthly low temperature was 36.4 degrees and the monthly high was 60 degrees.
