Good Morning! On this day in 1968, the St. Petersburg Sanitation Strike ended. The 116-day strike involved nonviolent protests but also led to four nights of riots.
Happy Jimmy Buffett Day in Florida! Last year, the Florida legislature set aside Aug. 30 each year to celebrate the life and music of the king of the Parrotheads, whose free-spirited lifestyle made significant contributions to national and state culture.

Dear Flyover Florida Reader,
Did you catch our note yesterday?
Here’s the question before us:
Should Floridians be held hostage to the media gatekeepers and rely on the Miami Herald, Tampa Bay Times, or Orlando Sentinel?
Wedon’t think so.
That’s why we started Flyover Florida: we think Floridians deserve a statewide news organization that deals in fact—not bias.
Here’s another question before you: would you like to own a piece of that company? There’s no better way to help ensure Florida has a high quality news source.
Right now, as we raise our second million dollars, investors receive 10% bonus shares. You can get them right here, right now.
We’ve built the fastest-growing news brand in Florida. But to take Flyover Florida to the next level—to reach millions more Floridians who are tired of being misled—we need you to stand with us. This is common-sense news for common-sense readers.
The future of news in Florida is at stake. Will you join us today?
“We should not have authoritarian boards dictate your day-to-day life with no accountability,” state Rep. Juan Porras (R-Miami) said on social media last week.
Nearly half of Florida’s population—about 9.5 million people—live in neighborhoods governed by homeowners associations.
Last year, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 1203, which imposed limits on homeowners associations throughout the state.
School Enrollment Down Across Florida
Public school enrollment across Florida has dropped this year, driven in part by more families using state vouchers to send their children to private schools.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools has lost almost 13,000 students this year, forcing the district to make budget cuts. “We’re gonna have to reduce our hourly personnel, we’re going to put a stop and minimize overtime,” Superintendent Jose Dotres said.
On Tuesday, the Broward school board discussed the possibility of closing 34 schools due to declining enrollment, with some elementary schools using only 40% of their capacity.
In Orange County, the public school district is facing a $25 million shortfall after enrollment dropped by 7,000 students, with approximately 3,000 of those students coming from immigrant families.
College Football Kicks Off in Florida
The college football season has arrived across Florida. USF and UCF opened Thursday night; FIU played Friday; Florida, Florida State, and FAU debut today; and Miami closes the slate Sunday against Notre Dame. See scores here.
Preseason No. 10 Miami enters with high expectations and faces an Irish squad on Sunday that reached last season’s national championship game. Georgia transfer Carson Beck takes over at quarterback, replacing NFL top pick Cam Ward.
Florida opens as No. 15 following an 8-5 season that ended with a Gasparilla Bowl win over Tulane. The Gators are massive favorites over Long Island ahead of next week’s in-state game against USF.
Florida State, coming off a 2-10 season, seeks a reset with a daunting home opener against No. 8 Alabama. Boston College transfer Tommy Castellanos will start at quarterback.
