Article Icon 1Florida Wildfire Numbers Jump

Wildfire numbers are jumping across Florida, with 82 wildfires burning nearly 7,800 acres as of Friday morning as the soil remains parched due to a drought.

To help curb the spread, the Florida Forest Service is actively patrolling for early signs of fire. Crews identified a small brush fire Wednesday near Cantonment in Escambia County, allowing for a swift response.

Meanwhile, neighborhoods in Collier County remain on edge as firefighters continue to battle the Picayune brush fire, which was burning 1,700 acres and was 70% contained on Friday.

Yesterday, when I came back home from work and with my children, I saw four police cars stationed here waiting, and I saw two helicopters fly over us to deliver water to the fire,” said Deborah Houk, who lives nearby. “It feels unnerving, but I am reassured by the response that we had.

A fugitive recently added to the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list was captured in High Springs in north-central Florida, just a day after a $1 million reward was announced in connection with her arrest.

KaShawn Nicola Roper, 50, of Kansas City, Missouri, faces felony charges, including second-degree murder, in the shooting of Jazmyn Henrion, a 23-year-old mother of three, on Aug. 23, 2020.

A credible tip to the FBI’s Jacksonville office led to a joint effort between the Gainesville Police Department, the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, and U.S. Marshals, leading to Roper’s capture during a traffic stop.

The State of Florida is dedicating $3 million to northwest Jacksonville after three people were killed in a Dollar General on Kings Road in 2023.

Many of the grants went to boost employment, with an official at Sharron Nursing Academy saying some of the funding will go toward training 60 additional people this year, a 15% increase.

“We made sure those dollars go directly into the local organizations that already know what’s needed and are already doing the critical hard work,” said Rep. Wyman Duggan, (R-Jacksonville) at a press conference on Thursday. “That’s who should be making the call. This money stays home.”

In addition, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Florida received $1 million to go toward its work serving nearly 3,000 Duval County children daily.
