Florida AG Investigates AI Tools
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced an investigation Thursday into OpenAI and ChatGPT, its popular chatbot product, in part concerning its alleged assistance in helping plan a mass shooting at Florida State University last year.
Court records reveal that Phoenix Ikner, the suspect in the April 2025 shooting, exchanged hundreds of messages with the artificial intelligence chatbot, asking about busy hours at the campus student union.
“AI should exist to supplement, support, and advance mankind, not lead to an existential crisis or our ultimate demise,” Uthmeier said.
OpenAI has said it will cooperate with the investigation.
President Trump Reacts to Fort Myers Attack
President Trump reacted on social media Thursday night to the attack and killing of a woman at a gas station in Fort Myers on April 2.
“The video of her brutal slaying is one of the most vicious things you will ever see,” the President said. “This animal was allowed to stay here.”
Rolbert Joachin, an illegal immigrant from Haiti, has been charged with second-degree murder for the attack.
Joachin entered the U.S. in August 2022 and was ordered removed by a federal judge that year, the Department of Homeland Security said, but was granted temporary protected status by the Biden administration, which expired in 2024.
Over $1.4M Awarded for Firefighters
Florida Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia awarded more than $1.4 million in grants Thursday to support fire departments, funding new equipment, tools to reduce exposure to cancer-causing chemicals, and a new fire training tower.
The over $40,000 in equipment grants were given to East Manatee, Parrish, and Longboat Key fire departments in Manatee County. The fire department in Hardee County was awarded $400,000.
In addition, $1 million was allocated to a new training tower in DeSoto County.
“By establishing a new fire training tower, we can better prepare our firefighters to put out fires quicker, limit property damage, and save lives,” said DeSoto County Fire Chief Chad Jergensen.
