Good Morning! On this day in 2004, drugstore chain owner Jack Eckerd died at 91. One of Florida’s best-known names for decades, Eckerd sold the chain in 1986, and its locations have been rebranded as Rite Aid and CVS stores.
After a near-record-hot weekend, we can expect more of the same today. Relief may be on the way by Thursday.

Governor to Veto ‘Free Kill’ Reversal
Gov. Ron DeSantis said he will veto a bill that would reverse the state’s 35-year-old “free kill” law that blocks adult children over 25 and their parents from suing for pain and suffering due to wrongful deaths caused by medical malpractice.
The governor said he is killing the measure to stop “jackpot justice,” arguing that ending the law would cause malpractice insurance premiums to skyrocket.
DeSantis noted that when Gov. Lawton Chiles signed the bill into law in 1990, Florida had a “massive malpractice insurance crisis,” and premiums are still high despite protections for doctors.
The House and Senate could override the veto with a two-thirds vote.
NRA Looks to Overturn Florida Law
The National Rifle Association (NRA) asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear its challenge to Florida’s ban on firearm purchases by adults under 21.
The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied the NRA’s legal challenge in March, two years after a three-judge panel similarly ruled against the organization.
The NRA’s Petition for certiorari asks the Supreme Court to review a split among federal circuit courts over whether adults under 21 have Second Amendment rights.
The Florida Legislature passed and then-Gov. Rick Scott signed the law shortly after the mass shooting in Parkland that killed 17 people. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said his office would not defend the law if the NRA filed an appeal with the high court.
Orange County Medical Debts Erased
Over 310,000 Orange County residents with medical debts have been granted a “no-strings-attached gift,” according to a national nonprofit that partnered with the county to forgive bills totaling about $472.5 million.
Community advocates appealed to county commissioners several times during the last 18 months to help citizens with medical debt by using leftover funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021.
Orange County received $270.7 million in ARPA funding and used $3 million from the program’s budget to erase residents’ debt, which was then leveraged by the nonprofit organization Undue Medical Debt for pennies on the dollar.
