Florida Hosts Shield of the Americas Summit
President Trump hosted the inaugural Shield of the Americas summit in Doral, with 12 Latin American and Caribbean leaders invited to forge a unified front against cartels. Broader geopolitical concerns were addressed, including curbing Chinese economic encroachment and managing regional migration.
The centerpiece of the event was the signing of a proclamation establishing the Americas Counter-Cartel Coalition. Trump called for a more militarized approach to fighting drug cartels, using the same intensity as to dismantle international terrorist groups.
Kristi Noem, appointed to the newly created role of “Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas,” led a breakout session on intelligence sharing. Noem, who has been removed from her role as Secretary of Homeland Security, will report to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who will lead the effort.
Leaders from the region’s largest economies, Mexico and Brazil, did not attend. Despite their absence, Mexico remained a focal point of the discussion. Trump characterized the country as the “epicenter” of cartel violence.
DeSantis Joins Trump at Prominent Events
On Saturday, Gov. Ron DeSantis joined President Trump and other national leaders at a dignified transfer ceremony at Delaware’s Dover Air Force Base for six U.S. soldiers killed in the Iran conflict, including Capt. Cody A. Khork of Winter Haven.
In addition to that somber event, DeSantis also had a prominent role in a college sports roundtable hosted by Trump at the White House on Friday, serving as a vice chair alongside New York Yankees President Randy Levine.
Based on feedback from the group of nearly 50 participants, Trump said he will issue an executive order within a week that will “solve all of the problems” raised during the unprecedented meeting about the future of college sports.
DeSantis helped guide discussions on the rapidly evolving landscape, with an agenda focused heavily on name, image, and likeness (NIL) regulation and the industry’s future structure.
Blue Origin Expansion
Blue Origin has initiated a massive expansion of its manufacturing capabilities on the Space Coast through Project Horizon. The company filed permit applications for an 800,000-square-foot facility situated on 31 acres within Merritt Island’s Exploration Park.
The expansion is part of a broader infrastructure surge to support the New Glenn heavy-lift rocket program. Previous filings for the Deep South Campus suggest the facility will focus on the manufacture of commercial space launch vehicles.
Industry analysts note this addition will bring Blue Origin’s total dedicated space for New Glenn to approximately 1.5 million square feet, rivaling SpaceX’s Starfactory in scale and enabling the production of dozens of upper stages annually.
The growth has economic and environmental implications for Brevard County. Blue Origin employs nearly 4,000 people in the region, and its continued expansion is expected to drive job creation and real estate demand in surrounding areas like Titusville and Cocoa.
