MIA Blocks Noem’s TSA Video
Miami International Airport (MIA) has joined the list of airports around the state and nation refusing to air Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s video on the impact of the government shutdown on flights, describing its political content as a violation of their policies.
Noem’s video is intended to replace the traditional Homeland Security message welcoming passengers to federal security screening areas. In the video, Noem blames Democrats for the federal shutdown.
Other airports, including Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, have also refused to play the video, which has been criticized for allegedly misusing federal dollars to deliver a partisan message to passengers waiting to be screened.
Miami-Dade’s Democratic Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, oversees MIA. An airport spokesperson cited county policy regulating airport communications, stating that the video wouldn’t be shown. You can see the video here.
Tampa’s Steinbrenner Field to be Renovated
The Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners approved almost $18 million for renovations to George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, the spring training home of the New York Yankees and the temporary home for the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Board approved the measure in a 6-1 vote. The money will come from bed tax funds, such as those from hotels. No general fund taxpayer dollars will be used, and the Yankees will contribute $22 million to the project.
The planned renovations include dozens of improvements to enhance the fan experience, including new seating, a modernized entry plaza, updated sound and security systems, shade structures, and a new scoreboard.
The county’s investment in Steinbrenner Field comes as the Rays’ new ownership explores potential sites for a new ballpark, including a location at Hillsborough Community College, next to Steinbrenner Field.
Dueling Protests over School Board Member Comments
Supporters of Charlie Kirk led a protest outside the Palm Beach County School District headquarters on Wednesday, ahead of a scheduled meeting, demanding the resignation of school board member Edwin Ferguson.
Following the assassination of conservative Christian activist Charlie Kirk, Ferguson called Kirk a “racist bigot” while also comparing him to Adolf Hitler. The local chapter of the NAACP held a counter-protest in support of Ferguson’s right to free speech.
The following school board meeting was heated, with nearly 70 people debating Ferguson’s comments about Kirk. After the meeting, Ferguson said he would not step down, “so I don’t know why people are wasting their voice.”
The school district has refused to take a position on the matter, and Ferguson, who admitted he wasn’t familiar with Kirk until after his death, has yet to apologize, saying that he intends to run for reelection.
