Florida Ties Execution Record at 19
Florida executed Jesse Guardado, 64, Thursday, its 19th execution of 2026, tying last year’s state record. The U.S. Supreme Court denied his last appeal hours earlier. In his final words, he apologized to the victim’s family and his own.
Guardado confessed to killing Jackie Malone, 75, in her Walton County home in 2004. She had helped him find work and housing. He stabbed her during a crack cocaine binge and stole $80 and a jewelry box.
Advocates pointed to abuse he suffered as a boy at a state-run reform school. Outgoing Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has said his goal is justice for victims’ families. Thomas Overton’s scheduled Nov. 19 execution would set a record at 20.

Flood Emergency Grows to 14 Counties
Gov. Ron DeSantis expanded Florida’s flood emergency to seven more counties, including Seminole, Volusia, and Lake, bringing the total to 14.
The flooding has killed two people and forced more than 100 rescues, and the water is still on the move.
In Arcadia, the Peace River rose from about 7 feet to nearly 14 feet in 24 hours, swamping DeSoto Veterans Memorial Park. Dennis O’Hara of the DeSoto County Emergency Operations Center said the river will stay in major flood stage for a lengthy stretch.
Brevard’s floodwater is now draining north into the St. Johns River, which is forecast to reach minor flood stage near Sanford today and crest Monday. In preparation, Seminole County is handing out 3,000 pre-filled sandbags.

Soto-Green Race Hovers Near Recount Line
Counties in Florida’s 9th Congressional District must submit results to the state today, deciding whether a recount follows. Rep. Darren Soto, D-Fla., led Republican Dan Green by just over 1,400 votes, or 0.52%, as of Thursday.
Soto declared victory in a district state lawmakers redrew to add Indian River, Highlands, and other counties. Green, a Vero Beach resident raised in Indian River County, loaned his campaign $2.24 million.
State law requires a machine recount at a margin of 0.5% or less, and a manual recount at 0.25% or less. Osceola County elections supervisor Mary Jane Arrington said the race sits just outside recount range for now, but results from the district’s other six counties could change that.
