DeSantis Warns ‘No Kings’ Protesters
Protesters in Florida and nationwide plan to take to the streets Saturday in “No Kings” demonstrations. With 75 protests planned in Florida, state officials say rioting will “not be tolerated” as they point to a 2021 anti-riot law.
The protests will coincide with a military parade in Washington, D.C., commemorating the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary and Flag Day. It is also President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday. You can see protest locations here.
At a press conference in Jacksonville this week, Gov. Ron DeSantis contrasted what is legal during demonstrations in Florida under the anti-riot law with what’s happening in Los Angeles during the ICE protests.
DeSantis stated that there’s a “clear distinction” between a person “protesting something peacefully” and crossing the line “to harming people in uniform, looting stores, burning buildings, burning cars,” and that state law has “drawn that line very clearly” in Florida.
Young Girl Survives Shark Attack
On Wednesday, a 9-year-old girl named Leah was snorkeling a few feet from her mother at a Boca Grande beach when a shark attacked and nearly severed her hand.
Nearby construction workers rushed to help Leah as her parents screamed for help and tried to get to shore. A witness said the group quickly grabbed shirts to help wrap Leah’s injuries.
Leah was airlifted to the hospital to undergo emergency surgery to reattach her hand. Doctors were able to put her hand back together, and she can move her fingers. She will be hospitalized for at least a week and then undergo physical therapy.
78,000 Acres Conserved
The state will purchase an additional 78,000 acres of land in the Ocala-to-Osceola Wildlife Corridor as part of the Florida Forever program. Over the past six years, over 374,000 acres have been added to the conservation program at a cost of $1.4 billion.
Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Cabinet approved an agreement to preserve the land that runs through several counties by buying two conservation easements, which prevent development while allowing agricultural operations.
About 61,000 acres of the preserve are in the Raiford to Osceola Greenway area in Baker and Union counties. Nearly 15,000 acres are in the Camp Blanding Greenway in Baker and Bradford counties. An additional 1,700 acres will connect easements in Alachua, Bradford, Clay, and Putnam counties.
