A Bahamas-bound Learjet 60 from Austin, Texas, crashed near Cresthaven in Palm Beach County on Sunday, killing all nine aboard.

The FAA says the jet plunged from 35,250 feet to 8,750 feet in just over a minute. Recordings posted online capture a crew member reporting ice and turbulence, then a frantic final transmission: “we’re out of time.”

Gov. Ron DeSantis called the crash “cataclysmic,” saying it left a large crater but no reported injuries on the ground. Roughly 600 nearby residents were expected to be relocated as the NTSB investigates.

Victims have not been identified.

Article Icon 1FSU Fires Norvell despite Massive Buyout

Florida State fired head coach Mike Norvell on Sunday, a day after a 36-24 home loss to Clemson dropped the Seminoles to 3-5.

The move comes despite a buyout of roughly $47 million, or 85% of his remaining salary through 2031. Norvell went 41-39, peaking with a 13-0 run to the 2023 ACC title before a College Football Playoff snub, but FSU is 10-22 since the start of 2024.

Former Seminoles quarterback Rick Stockstill takes over as interim coach while the university conducts a national search. The shakeup follows the September firing of Athletic Director Michael Alford.

The Seminoles play at Boston College on Saturday.

Article Icon 1Manatee Season Opens in Apollo Beach

The Manatee Viewing Center in Apollo Beach opened on Sunday for its 40th anniversary season, with free admission and parking.

Manatees have sought refuge in the warm canal at Tampa Electric’s Big Bend Power Station since the 1970s, gathering when Tampa Bay’s water drops to 68 degrees or colder. Last winter, the utility counted a record 2,100 in one day.

About 190 manatees have returned for more than 20 years, one of them for over four decades. The center drew more than 460,000 visitors last season.

This season adds a permanent home for its touch-tank rays, a freshwater turtle habitat with underwater viewing, and public access to a state fish hatchery. The center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through April 15.
