Good Morning! On this day in 1984, Space Shuttle Challenger lifted off from Kennedy Space Center with seven astronauts aboard, then the largest crew ever flown. One of them, Kathryn Sullivan, became the first American woman to walk in space.
Remember the traditions you used to keep and somehow just stopped? Maybe not since you were a kid. A lot of the ones we grew up with are quietly slipping away, and the numbers on how far each has fallen are steeper than you’d expect. Which Sunday tradition did families once build the whole week around? And why are so few grooms asking her father for permission anymore? In the latest episode of Flyover Focus, we count down 10 American traditions that are fading, ending with the one you could still bring back before the month is out. Tune in here!
Today’s sponsor, Oricle Hearing Aids, is helping readers hear more clearly without sky-high prices, offering a tiny, easy-to-use hearing aid with clear sound and all-day power for under $100.

Florida Voter Registration Ends Today
Today is the last day to register to vote in the state’s Nov. 3 general election under the 29-day “book closing” rule, and voters registered in other states must register in Florida.
Anyone with a Florida driver’s license or state ID and the last four digits of their Social Security number can register or check their status online. Paper applications are accepted at supervisor of elections offices, public libraries, and driver’s license offices.
This year’s ballot includes the race to succeed Gov. Ron DeSantis, a U.S. Senate seat, Congress, and the Legislature. All voters get the same ballot regardless of party.
Turnout was 54% in the 2022 midterm, compared with 78.9% for the 2024 presidential race.

Dengue Outbreak Sets State Record
Florida’s dengue outbreak has set a state record with 252 locally acquired cases this year, including 62 in the latest weekly report. Hillsborough County, the outbreak’s center, accounts for 223 of them.
The previous high came in 2023, when the state logged nearly 200 cases. Florida confirmed its first dengue death of the year last month in Hillsborough County.
Hillsborough extended its local emergency through Oct. 8, and officials say residents should expect more spray helicopters overhead. Eric Long, the county’s mosquito operations superintendent, said the order gives officials “an opportunity to ask for more resources to combat this issue.”
Residents are urged to drain standing water around their homes.

Flood Watches Blanket North Florida
Flood watches cover much of the Panhandle and Northeast Florida today as rounds of storms could bring 4-5 inches of rain to coastal areas around Panama City before the watch ends.
Around Jacksonville, areas along and north of I-10 could get another 1-3 inches, with isolated spots nearing 5 inches, on already saturated ground. Gusty northeast winds tonight are expected to bring dangerous rip currents, beach erosion, and minor to moderate tidal flooding along the Atlantic coast Tuesday through Thursday.
Central Florida could see 3-5 inches through Tuesday. Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center gives a system in the southwestern Gulf a 30% chance of development within seven days.
