Season Peaks Without a Single Hurricane

The Atlantic hurricane season reached its climatological peak on Thursday without producing a single hurricane, with just five short-lived named storms generating roughly 7% of the basin’s typical accumulated cyclone energy.

Forecasters credit a strong El Niño, Saharan dry air, and persistent wind shear with choking off development.

No Atlantic season since satellite records began in 1966 has gone longer without its first hurricane than 2002 and 2013, when Gustav and Humberto reached that strength Sept. 11. If the basin stays quiet through Friday, 2026 takes the record outright.

Officials urge Floridians to stay prepared regardless, noting the season runs through Nov. 30 and September historically remains its most active month.

A Central Florida groom hit head-on while driving to his own wedding married his bride anyway, exchanging vows from a hospital bed in a private wing of Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Kapri DeRamus was stopped at a traffic light on Sept. 5, about 15 minutes from the couple’s Altamonte Springs venue, when another vehicle crossed into his lane, according to the couple’s attorneys.

He suffered two broken arms, a broken jaw, and rib and knee injuries. His grandfather officiated the ceremony that evening.

Bride Tyasia Thomas’ brother launched a fundraiser to cover medical bills and lost income while DeRamus’ warehouse job is on hold. It had raised nearly $2,000 toward its $7,000 goal by Thursday.
