Florida Sues Netflix Over Kids’ Data

Attorney General James Uthmeier sued Netflix on Wednesday, seeking billions of dollars in damages over claims the streaming giant tracked children’s viewing data and used it to hook young users.

The lawsuit alleges Netflix collects children’s clicks, interests, and viewing behavior without required consent, using the data to keep kids watching. The state seeks a permanent injunction, a data purge, and civil penalties under Florida’s consumer protection and digital privacy laws.

The suit also accuses the company of exposing children to graphic content and extends a broader push that includes prior Florida actions involving Meta and artificial intelligence companies.

Gas Jumps 18 Cents Overnight

Florida’s average price for regular gasoline jumped 18 cents overnight to $4.07 a gallon on Wednesday, 10 cents higher than a week ago and 20 cents above last month.

Jacksonville drivers saw an even bigger jump of 21 cents, putting local prices about $1.03 above last year. Bargains persisted, including a Duval County Love’s at $3.72 and a St. Johns County CITGO at $3.71.

Southwest Florida saw similar spikes, with a 52-cent spread between stations at one Fort Myers intersection. The auto club says prices have been volatile for weeks with no clear sign of typical post-summer relief.

Ringleader Admits $245M Bitcoin Heist

A 22-year-old Miami resident pleaded guilty on Tuesday to leading an international ring that stole more than $245 million in bitcoin from a single victim, among the largest cryptocurrency thefts in U.S. history.

Malone Lam, a Singapore citizen, admitted to a federal racketeering conspiracy count in Washington, D.C. Prosecutors said his crew posed as Google and crypto exchange staff to trick a Washington man out of more than 4,100 bitcoin in August 2024.

The proceeds funded nightclub tabs up to $500,000 a night, exotic cars worth up to $3.8 million each, rented mansions, and private jets. Lam, arrested at his Miami rental home, is the 11th of 18 defendants to plead guilty and faces up to 20 years.

A status hearing is set for Dec. 8.
