Article Icon 1Hurricane Center Eyes Gulf System

The National Hurricane Center gives a low-pressure system expected to form this weekend in the northeastern Gulf a 20% chance of development over seven days. Odds stay near 0% through 48 hours.

The disturbance is forecast to drift northeast near the Big Bend, possibly toward the southeastern U.S. coast next week. The European model shows higher confidence than the American GFS.

Impacts would fall mainly on North and Central Florida, as a rainmaker forecasters say would be welcome across drought-hit parts of the Panhandle, Georgia, and South Carolina. If named, it would be Bertha, the season’s second storm.

The Culinary Institute of America has selected Jacksonville for its Southeast campus, city leaders confirmed. The 50,000-square-foot school would anchor a proposed $160.5 million hotel and convention center at 330 E. Bay St., site of the demolished county courthouse.

The City Council approved up to $35 million in incentives, money officials say was set aside outside the general fund. The Downtown Investment Authority must negotiate a final deal, and the school will need a temporary home during construction.

Supporters cite the institute’s San Antonio campus, credited by the school with more than $21 billion in impact over 16 years.

Article Icon 1Musk Quietly Buys $1B Florida Power Firm

Elon Musk has purchased Jacksonville-based APR Energy, a federal filing shows, in a deal worth at least $1 billion.

The Federal Trade Commission notice lists the Musk as buyer of New APR Energy LLC; neither side announced the sale.

APR deploys mobile gas and diesel turbine plants that can be installed in days, powering data centers and utilities worldwide. Duos Technologies disclosed $50.4 million in proceeds from its 5% stake, implying the deal’s value.

The purchase adds a power-generation arm alongside Tesla’s energy division and xAI, whose data centers run on gas turbines.
