Terrorist Designation Bill Signed
Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law on Monday that creates a formal process for Florida to designate groups as domestic terrorist organizations and protects against the application of foreign and religious laws, including Sharia law.
DeSantis signed the Systems of Law and Terrorist Organizations bill while in Tampa. The measure bans the use of taxpayer funds to “support or promote” organizations designated as terrorists by Florida’s Department of Law Enforcement.
“This will help the state of Florida protect you. It’ll help us protect your tax dollars. It’ll help us protect things that should not be happening in the United States of America, but certainly shouldn’t be happening in the free state of Florida,” DeSantis said.
Once designated a terrorist organization, a group can no longer receive state funding. Universities would have to report expelled students who were attending on visas to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. DeSantis predicted the law would likely draw a legal challenge.
DeSantis Hosts ‘Boom Belt’ Event
On Tuesday, Gov. DeSantis credited Florida’s business-friendly measures as the reason people and capital are moving to the state in unprecedented numbers. He attributed some of the success to laws that shield companies from consumer lawsuits.
DeSantis participated in the panel discussion at a Texas Stock Exchange event in Miami alongside Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Citadel Securities President Jim Esposito, and Texas Stock Exchange Founder and CEO Jim Lee.
The event, Welcome to the Boom Belt: A Return to First Principles in Public Markets, featured keynote remarks by SEC Chairman Paul Atkins, who called Florida fertile ground for producing prosperity.
Defined as spanning 11 Southeastern states, including Florida, the Boom Belt is outpacing every other quadrant of the country economically and accounts for 60% of jobs. According to Lee, 700 households move to the Boom Belt daily.
Donalds Tours with Healthcare Plan
Republican gubernatorial candidate U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds kicked off his Defending the Florida Dream tour on Monday in The Villages by announcing a healthcare proposal focused on increasing transparency and lowering costs for Floridians.
Calling it Your Doctor, Your Price, his plan would require doctors and hospitals to post prices for their 20 most-used services directly on their websites so patients can better understand costs before receiving care.
Under the proposal, Florida would adopt federal prescription drug reforms enacted under TrumpRx that put pressure on drugmakers to lower prices to align with those in similarly developed countries. Patients would also be able to visit the doctor of their choice without prior approval from a health plan.
The Naples Republican emphasized that transparency is key to reducing and stabilizing healthcare costs. The tour includes policy discussions on issues such as public safety and education, and will next stop in Brevard County.
