Article Icon 1DeSantis Signs Land Use Bill

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 399 on Friday, despite at least one municipality planning to sue over the legislation.

The new law prevents local governments from blocking residential projects based on compatibility, allows administrative approval of certain residential developments without public hearings, and requires a simple majority vote to change land use plans, among other things.

You have local government regulations that are preventing people from supplying inventory to a much-needed market, said Hialeah Rep. David Borrero, who sponsored the bill.

Miami Beach officials are exploring the possibility of a lawsuit, as the measure allows development to move forward without being cleared by the Miami Beach Historic Preservation Board, paving the way for several large water slides to be built at the Fontainebleau hotel.

This bill egregiously interferes with our residents’ right to public input,” said Miami Beach Commissioner Alex Fernandez.

The Artemis II astronauts flew to the Kennedy Space Center Friday to prepare for the scheduled launch that will circle the moon, the first crew to leave Earth orbit since the final Apollo mission a half century ago.

Hey, let’s go to the moon!” Mission Commander Reid Wiseman shouted to the crowd. “I think the nation and the world have been waiting a long time to do this again.

NASA is aiming for liftoff as soon as Wednesday. The space agency has the first six days of April to launch the Space Launch System rocket before standing down for nearly a month.

The State University System Board of Governors on Thursday removed sociology from the public university general education catalog. The class is now considered an elective.

Sociology as a discipline is now social and political advocacy dressed in the regalia of the academy,” Chancellor Ray Rodrigues said.

Only two members of the 17-member board of governors voted against the motion. The board’s faculty representative, Kimberly Dunn, opposed the ban.

The move comes after Florida’s public education committee cut the Introduction to Sociology textbook from 665 pages to 267 pages earlier this year, omitting sections on media and technology, global inequality, race and ethnicity, social stratification, gender, sex, and sexuality.
