Good Morning! On this day in 1933, Kenneth H. MacKay Jr., the 42nd governor of Florida, was born in Ocala. Known as Buddy, he was governor for 24 days. Gov. Lawton Chiles died on December 12, 1998, and MacKay, who was lieutenant governor at the time, assumed his duties until January 5, 1999, when newly elected Gov. Jeb Bush was sworn into office.

North Florida Drought Reaches ‘Exceptional’ Level
North Florida’s drought reached the “exceptional” level for the first time in 14 years.
The drought warning was issued for areas along the Suwannee River in Madison and Lafayette counties, with no relief expected soon.
“Little to no rain is expected for the next week, drought conditions may continue to worsen across the area … water demand increases, temperatures warm up and rivers and lakes struggle to recover,” according to the National Weather Service of Tallahassee.
Tallahassee Hospital Seeks to Evict Patient
Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare sued a patient earlier this month, saying the woman has refused to leave her hospital room since being discharged last October.
“TMH has limited inpatient beds,” the complaint states. “The defendant’s continued occupancy prevents use of the bed for patients needing acute care.“
The hospital has repeatedly offered transportation and has made many other efforts to coordinate her departure with family members.
Homeowners living in the Laurel Meadows subdivision are suing Sarasota County after their homes flooded during Tropical Storm Debby in 2024.
The lawsuit centers on an alleged breach in a dike along Cow Pen Slough that plaintiffs say allowed floodwaters to inundate the neighborhood.
“I couldn’t believe it, and people like my next-door neighbor have been here for 21 years, and he said, you know, we’ve never had a problem like this. Something is drastically wrong,” homeowner Wayne Cates said.
Eighty-four of the 85 homes in Laurel Meadows needed to be gutted following the storm.
