Paynes Prairie Preserve became Florida’s first state preserve in 1971. On any given day, you might see horses and cattle grazing along a trail, a bald eagle drifting overhead, or bison (American buffalo) making their way across an open range. In the small town of Micanopy, tucked between Gainesville and Ocala in north-central Florida, the 23,000-acre park features wetlands filled with alligators and waterfowl.
