Disagreement Over Drilling
The Trump administration on Thursday announced plans to allow new oil drilling off Florida’s coast for the first time in decades. Federal waters in the eastern Gulf of America have been off-limits since 1995 because of concerns over potential oil spills.
Gov. Ron DeSantis criticized the move, saying it would “weaken protections we worked really hard to establish offshore.”
Other state leaders agreed, with Sen. Ashley Moody (R-Fla) calling the policy change “highly concerning.”
The decision is part of the administration’s five-year plan to open up offshore drilling to create jobs and increase energy security.
New Fines for License Plate Frames
A new Florida law tightening rules on license plate modifications took effect on Oct. 1.
House Bill 253, “Offenses Involving Motor Vehicles,” adds sharper penalties for drivers who alter, hide, or use devices to manipulate their plates.
Those with decorative license plate frames could face penalties as well if their frame blocks any part of a license plate, including a number, letter, sticker, or other detail. It can now be charged as a second-degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $500 fine and 60 days in jail.
Florida Launches Main Street App
Florida has launched a new app designed to help residents and visitors discover local businesses and attractions in Main Street communities across the state ahead of Thanksgiving travel and Small Business Saturday shopping.
“The Florida Main Street App invites users to personalize their travel experience by building a dynamic itinerary to explore restaurants, businesses, parks, theaters, murals, and historic sites in Florida’s Main Street Communities,” Secretary of State Cord Byrd said.
Long-term care isn’t always fully covered by Medicare.
Nearly half of Americans over 65 will eventually need some form of long-term care—from help with dressing and meal prep to full-time nursing support. But here’s the catch: Medicare and Medigap usually don’t cover these costs unless tied to medical treatment. That means many people end up paying for in-home assistance or nursing care out of pocket, and those bills can add up fast.
Here’s what you can do:
Look into long-term care insurance: It can help cover daily assistance costs that Medicare won’t.
Plan early: The younger and healthier you are when you apply, the lower your premiums tend to be.
Medicare’s annual enrollment period for 2026 closes on Dec. 7, so make sure you explore the options you need to protect your health and finances for the years ahead.

Long-term care isn’t always fully covered by Medicare.
Almost half of Americans over 65 will eventually need some form of long-term care, but Medicare and Medigap typically don’t cover these costs unless linked to medical treatment. That means you could face out-of-pocket expenses for in-home care or nursing facilities, which can quickly add up. As Medicare’s annual enrollment period for 2026 approaches (ending Dec. 7), it’s a good time to review your coverage and explore long-term care insurance options that can help safeguard your health and your finances.
