Broward Man Freed after 26 Years
After serving 26 years of a life sentence, Tavares Hutchinson of Broward County was freed on Friday. Hutchinson fought his sentence unsuccessfully until the Innocence Project of Florida, a nonprofit that helps exonerate wrongfully convicted prisoners, got involved.
Police said Hutchinson committed an armed robbery and stole a man’s ring and 14-karat gold chain in 1999. Testing showed that the necklace found in Hutchinson’s possession wasn’t 14 karat gold and did not match the description.
“This was not an exoneration,” the Broward County State Attorney’s Office said in a statement. “Prosecutors decided that it was in the interests of justice to modify Mr. Hutchinson’s sentence to 26 years, five months, and 24 days.”
“He went in in his 20s and now he’s almost 50 years old, and so that is a big chunk of his life that was lost to this situation,” Brandon Scheck, the legal director for the Innocence Project of Florida, said.
The permit hints at a significant addition for the park’s newest world. The expansion would be part of Universal’s long-term strategy to transform its Orlando resort into a weeklong destination.
This is the second hint of a major project in the pipeline at or near Epic Universe, which premiered May 22 as the area’s first all-new theme park in 25 years. Epic has set new tourism records.
No details have been released about the building’s purpose, and Universal has not confirmed any speculation regarding its intended use.
Stuff the Charger Food Drive
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) are asking Floridians to support their annual Stuff the Charger food drive.
Through Nov. 30, the law enforcement agencies are collecting canned goods and other staples to help stock local food banks for the holidays.
“By loading our Chargers with food donations, we are delivering hope into Florida homes and helping families embrace the holiday season with dignity and joy,” FLHSMV Executive Director Dave Kerner said.
