Florida DOGE Investigates Higher Ed
A Department of Government Efficiency report shows that New College of Florida in Sarasota is far outspending the state’s public universities, while outcomes for its graduates rank at or near the bottom.
NCF spent $83,207 per student in fiscal year 2024, the highest among state universities. The University of Florida, a major research institution based in Gainesville, was the next highest at $45,765 per student, while the lowest was the University of Central Florida at $12,172 per student.
Part of this disparity may be explained by the number of administrators at New College, which employs 33 administrators per 100 students. UF, which has a much larger undergraduate enrollment, employs about 27 administrators per 100 students.
Apalachicola Bay Oyster Plan Approved
Ending a five-year ban, limited oyster harvesting will return in January to some parts of Northwest Florida’s struggling Apalachicola Bay.
“No place knows oysters better than Apalachicola, which has historically produced more than 90% of Florida’s oysters,” said Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Only about 10% of its original 10,000 acres will open for harvesting on Jan. 1, and the initial season will only be open through Feb. 28.
Locals celebrated the return of the industry. “You go from a boat captain to cutting somebody’s grass. You know, that’s a pretty big change,” said Wayne Williams, president of the area’s Seafood Work & Watermen’s Association.
Cold Front Headed to Florida
Florida’s Panhandle is expected to experience its first freeze on Monday, and temperatures in South Florida are expected to drop 10-20 degrees below historical averages.
“A cold outbreak will plunge into the U.S. this weekend and bring the coldest air of the season to the Midwest and Northeast, (and) a widespread freeze into the Deep South with some record lows possible as far south as Florida,” said Weather.com meteorologist Jonathan Erdman.
With 40-degree temperatures reaching as far south as Fort Myers, iguanas may begin to drop out of the trees Tuesday morning as the temperatures “cold-stun” them and trigger dormancy.

A small group of Americans has discovered a way to completely bypass the traditional banking system. They’re using decentralized finance to become their own banks, collecting the same transaction fees that JPMorgan and Citigroup earn: 12%-20% monthly returns, regardless of whether markets go up or down.
