Volusia Beaches Closed Due to Tidal Activity
Volusia County officials have issued double-red flags along the coastline, prohibiting all water entry until further notice due to dangerous surf conditions, strong rip currents, and widespread debris left behind by recent tidal activity.
The jetty connector in Ponce Inlet was damaged early Saturday, following another round of severe tidal activity. The structure has been closed to the public since Hurricane Imelda, when it suffered tide-related impacts.
Officials reminded visitors not to remove or disturb the large amounts of seaweed that have washed ashore during recent tides, as it plays an important role in capturing sand and helping beaches and dunes recover naturally.
Beach driving access will likely remain limited over the next several days until conditions improve.
Bear Hunt Permits Issued
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) received over 163,000 applications for the original 187 black bear hunt permits, with anti-hunters drawing at least 23% of the tags.
As of Thursday, 148 of the 172 bear hunting permits, awarded through a paid lottery system, had been claimed. In September, FWC data showed a decline in bear abundance in one of the subpopulations, resulting in a reduction of 15 bear permits.
The campaign to combat the hunt by conservationists proved to be at least somewhat successful, with activists saying they have obtained at least 39 of the permits. Each permit allows for one bear to be killed.
Activists participated in the lottery with the intention of preventing hunters from obtaining the permits. The cost per entry was $5 each, with a $100 permit fee for residents and a $300 fee for nonresidents.
Project Thanksgiving Kicks Off in South Florida
Now in its 35th year, the annual Project Thanksgiving campaign kicked off on Sunday, continuing the partnership between the United Way of Palm Beach County and CBS12 News to support families facing food insecurity during the holiday season.
Starting this week, the event’s sponsor, iTHINK Financial, will host donation drop-off boxes at several of its locations across the area. Donations of both food and money will benefit nearly a dozen local agencies working directly with families in need.
According to the United Way, 173,000 residents in South Florida are unsure where their next meal will come from, with an estimated 51,000 of these being children.
