Article Icon 1Weigh Stations to Become Immigration Checkpoints

On Monday, Attorney General James Uthmeier held a press conference in Live Oak to announce that truck weigh stations around the state will also serve as ICE checkpoints as part of a new immigration enforcement initiative.

The new partnership with federal agencies will check for English proficiency while continuing agricultural inspections along major interstate highways. It follows the arrests of two truck drivers found to be in the country illegally with licenses from other states.

Officials said that the 23 interdiction stations “will serve as critical enforcement points to stop human smuggling, fraudulent documents, and unsafe commercial vehicles.”

Illegal immigrants are unable to obtain driver’s licenses in Florida. Uthmeier said that sanctuary states that provide illegal immigrants with licenses are creating a “major liability.” Nineteen states, plus Washington, D.C., issue licenses regardless of immigration status.

More than 2.5 million people have signed a petition calling for leniency for illegal immigrant Harjinder Singh, who faces three charges of vehicular homicide and up to 45 years in prison over a truck accident that killed three people on the Florida Turnpike in St. Lucie County.

The petition, posted on Change.org, calls for Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Board of Executive Clemency to reexamine the case against Singh, arguing he did not have criminal intent or history.

Singh, 28, traveled to California following the accident but was extradited back to Florida, where he will remain in police custody. He was denied bond on Saturday.

Authorities said Singh failed an English proficiency test after the accident. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has questioned California and Washington authorities who issued Singh, a native of India, a work permit and driver’s license.

Article Icon 1Bill Proposes New Florida National Park

U.S. Rep. Randy Fine introduced a bill to propose the nation’s 64th national park, Florida Springs National Park, that would include the Ocala National Forest and surrounding springs.

The Secretary of the Interior will conduct a special resource study to determine the suitability and feasibility of establishing a national park in Central and North Florida in Lake, Marion, and Putnam Counties.

The study area covers about 2,800 square miles and includes De Leon Springs, Blue Spring, Silver Springs, Alexander Springs, and dozens of other natural preserves.

After the bill was introduced, it was referred to the U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources.
