Article Icon 1Hulk Hogan’s Death Investigated

Police are still investigating the death last month of professional wrestling icon Hulk Hogan, whose real name was Terry Bollea, from what the medical examiner concluded was a heart attack.

The Clearwater Police Department said in a statement that the “unique nature of this case has required us to interview multiple witnesses and seek medical records from various providers, and our detectives continue to do that.”

Hogan died July 24 at age 71 at a hospital after paramedics and police were called to his Clearwater home. The 911 call and police body camera video of the scene have not been released, which police say will happen when the investigation is complete.

Police previously said there was no evidence of foul play and have not indicated why they are looking further into the cause of death.

Article Icon 1Florida Power & Light Reduces Rate Hike Request

The Florida Public Service Commission will hold a hearing in October on a proposed base-rate increase settlement for Florida Power & Light (FPL).

Under the agreement, FPL reduced its 2026 base rate revenue request from the $1.55 billion it had presented in February by 39%, to $945 million. The base rate revenue request for 2027 was reduced by 17%, from $927 million to $766 million.

The settlement would cap the typical residential bill increase at 13 cents a day—or $3.79 a month—starting in 2026. Under the plan, a 1,000-kWh bill would rise from $134.14 today to $137.93 in January 2026, reaching $148 by the end of 2029.

The settlement drew sharp criticism from opponents. AARP Florida blasted it as a “closed-door deal” that leaves residential customers—especially seniors on fixed incomes—with little voice.

Article Icon 1Cities Push Back on FDOT Street Art Ban

Citing traffic safety, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) ordered cities around the state to remove surface pavement art tied to “social, political, or ideological messages.” If they refuse, the cities risk losing federal transportation funding.

FDOT sent memos to cities in August citing specific locations following the state’s June 30 guidance restricting art on public roads. While many complied, cities such as Key West and Delray Beach voted to designate painted crosswalks as cultural landmarks to preserve rainbow-colored intersections.

In Orlando, FDOT covered the rainbow crosswalk outside the Pulse Nightclub, a tribute to the 49 victims of the 2016 shooting. Since the removal, demonstrators have gathered at the site, filling the crosswalk and surrounding sidewalks with colored chalk.

In a letter to Orlando on Aug. 21, FDOT identified 18 street art locations for removal. The rainbow crosswalk outside Pulse was not on the list and was specifically approved by FDOT in 2017.
