Man Dies in ICE Custody in Miami

A Canadian man held by immigration officials died Monday at the Bureau of Prisons Federal Detention Center in Miami. Officials are investigating the death.

“Canadian consular officials are urgently seeking more information from U.S. officials,” Foreign Minister Anita Anand said Thursday on social media.

Johnny Noviello, 49, was convicted of racketeering and drug trafficking in Volusia County in 2023 and sentenced to 12 months in prison. On May 15, he was arrested at his probation office and charged with removability based on those drug convictions.

EF-1 Tornado Touches Down in Largo

The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down in Pinellas County on Wednesday, causing significant damage in Largo.

An estimated 50 homes were destroyed in the Ranchero Village neighborhood, along with another 10 to 15 in the Bay Ranch mobile home community.

The tornado stayed on the ground for about eight minutes and had a 2-mile-long track. See an interactive map of the reported damage.

A doorbell camera caught footage of the strong winds lifting an L-shaped home with a 76-year-old woman inside, then setting it down again. The woman “got thrown around and beat up pretty bad,” but survived.

Jacksonville Launches Self-Driving Shuttles

Jacksonville plans to launch the nation’s first permitted public transportation service powered by autonomous vehicles in the Bay Street Innovation Corridor on Monday.

Students gathered for the Prime Osborn Convention Center for the National Autonomous Vehicle Day Conference last Monday speculated that it might make the streets safer.

“It’s not AVs versus human drivers,” said Christian Zardnes, a University of North Florida student. “It’s more like we’re working alongside with AVs so I have more of a collaboration with any certain machine, learning or artificial intelligence to help reduce the human behaviors that cause these human crashes to go down.”
