Florida Insurer Wants to Raise Rates

Trusted Resource Underwriters Exchange (TRUE) requested permission this week from Florida’s Office of Insurance Regulation to increase homeowner insurance rates for over 5,000 policyholders by 31.5%.

“Our internal models indicate a 60 percent rate adjustment is actually warranted,” TRUE CEO Anthony Scavongelli said.

State regulators will make a decision July 1 after the public comment period closes.

Florida consistently ranks among the states with the highest homeowner insurance rates, driven by frequent hurricanes, tropical storms, and flooding. According to Bankrate, the average annual premium for a $300,000 home is $5,409—more than double the national average of $2,341—and can reach $8,397 in West Palm Beach.

Three People Struck by Lightning Friday

Three people were struck by lightning Friday in New Smyrna Beach, including a beachgoer in his 20s who went into cardiac arrest and was hospitalized.

Two others were indirectly hit at the Club at the Venetian Bay golf course but declined medical transport. A lightning strike also totaled another man’s car, leaving his Toyota Corolla “crushed like a can.”

New Smyrna Fire Department spokesperson Adam Sarwi said, “It is not uncommon when someone is struck by lightning that there are others during the same storm.”

Florida is known as the “lightning capital” of the country, with more than 2,000 lightning injuries reported over the last 20 years.

State Archives Seeking Weather Photos

The State Archives of Florida is seeking photographs for its newest photographic collection, “Weather, Disaster and Recovery.”
