Attorney General Found in Contempt
On Tuesday, Florida’s attorney general was found to be in civil contempt of a federal judge’s order over a new state law making it a misdemeanor for people to enter the state illegally.
U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams said that Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier’s arguments that he didn’t flout her injunction, which put the law on hold, were unconvincing.
At issue is a letter Uthmeier sent to law enforcement on April 23, stating that he couldn’t stop them from making arrests under SB 4C, a law making it a first-degree misdemeanor for a person to enter the state as an “unauthorized alien.”
Uthmeier was spared from paying a fine or spending time in jail. Instead, the judge ordered the state’s chief legal officer to file biweekly reports to her about whether any arrests, detentions, or law enforcement actions have been made under the law.
Food Network Star Anne Burrell Dead at 55
Anne Burrell, 55, the Food Network star best known for leading the channel’s hit show Worst Cooks in America, died on Tuesday at her home in Brooklyn, New York.
Her cause of death was not immediately reported. However, TMZ stated she was found unresponsive at her residence on Tuesday morning.
The news came one day after Burrell announced her next professional endeavor—a partnership with Miami-based CareRite Centers. The plan was for the chef to help the rehabilitation and nursing centers expand their Signature Culinary Excellence program.
Panthers Win the Stanley Cup
The Florida Panthers beat the Edmonton Oilers 5-1 last night, securing the franchise’s second consecutive Stanley Cup. The Panthers won the series in six games, one fewer than last year’s matchup with the Oilers.
The Panthers started fast by scoring twice in the first period, including a beautiful goal from Sam Reinhart within the first five minutes of action. Reinhart went on to log four goals in the game, a feat that hadn’t been accomplished since 1957.
Center Sam Bennett was named Stanley Cup MVP after logging a playoff-high fifteen goals, five of which came in the Finals.
Only one other team has won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships since the turn of the century—the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021.
