Article Icon 1Lawmakers Vote on Final Budget

State lawmakers have completed negotiations for this year’s budget, agreeing to nearly $560 million in project funding and a 2% raise for state workers. A final vote is expected tonight.

The spending plan is about $500 million less than the $115.6 billion budget proposed by Gov. Ron DeSantis for fiscal year 2025-26.

As part of the June 13 budget deal, lawmakers agreed to cut $1.3 billion in taxes. More than $900 million will come from eliminating the tax on business rent.

Other budget cuts include making the traditional back-to-school sales tax holiday on clothes under $75 and other school items permanent, lasting the length of August every year. That’s estimated to save consumers at least $167.7 million per year.

Article Icon 1Dunedin Marina Restoration Funded

The Dunedin Marina, situated on the intercoastal waterway between Dunedin and Clearwater, was awarded $500,000 in state funding from the Florida Senate to begin restoration after suffering heavy damage from Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

Senate Budget Chief Ed Hooper, a Republican from Palm Harbor, sponsored the local funding request seeking $3 million in state support for a multi-year rebuild to restore what is one of the region’s key recreational and commercial assets.

An engineering study estimates the total cost of repairs and replacements at $18 million. So far, $5 million in federal funding and $5.1 million in state support have been secured. Construction is scheduled to begin Aug. 1.

Rebuilding the marina is expected to boost tourism, restore economic development, support local businesses, and enhance emergency response capabilities along the coast.

Article Icon 1 Atlas V Rocket to Launch Amazon’s Satellites

Amazon’s second fleet of 27 internet satellites, part of the Project Kuiper constellation, is scheduled to launch at 1:25 p.m. today on a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

When ULA launches the massive rocket, Floridians as far as Jacksonville and Miami could see it light up the sky after liftoff. In fact, depending on cloud cover, it could be visible from most of Florida.

Atlas V will launch the Kuiper satellites into low Earth orbit (LEO), where they will maneuver to join a constellation of satellites that will offer high-speed internet to customers within the fleet’s range of operation.
